Types of funeral insurance: Premium options and cover
A funeral insurance policy covers the expenses and administrative tasks arising from a person's death, from the funeral service itself to legal and psychological support for the family. However, not all policies work in the same way; the premiums you pay and the level of protection provided can vary significantly from one option to another.
Therefore, understanding the different types of funeral insurance by looking at both payment structures and the cover included helps you choose the option that best fits your age and situation.
Types of funeral insurance by premium structure
Natural premium
The premium varies each year depending on the age of the insured person and the sum insured for the funeral service at any given time. It is the most affordable option initially, making it particularly suitable for younger people looking for the lowest possible starting rate when taking out a policy.
Level premium
The price does not increase as you get older, but it may rise due to increases in the sum insured. At Adeslas, we offer this option through our Adeslas Completo Funeral Insurance, available to anyone under 70 years of age. It features a fixed rate for life, meaning no age-related price increases, and allows you to include up to 15 family members under the same policy, with a 10% discount when insuring three or more people.
Single premium
A single lump-sum payment is made when taking out the policy. This structure applies to our Adeslas Single Premium Funeral Insurance, designed for individuals aged between 60 and 99 who do not yet hold a funeral policy. It also offers the option to surrender the policy to recover part of the premium paid, should you need to.
Semi-natural or mixed premium
This option combines more than one of the previous structures within a single product. The premium is set in the early stages, rises gradually at first and levels out later on, once a certain age is reached. This applies to our Adeslas Plus Funeral Insurance, which is our most popular policy. It is available to people under 65, covers up to five insured people per policy, and does not increase in price with age, although it may rise due to increases in the sum insured.
Types of funeral insurance by level of cover
In addition to how premiums are structured, funeral insurance policies differ by their level of cover and waiting periods, which is the initial time frame after taking out a policy before certain benefits take effect. At Adeslas, each policy tier includes the following main areas of cover:
- Adeslas Single Premium Funeral Insurance: Covers comprehensive funeral services, specialist adviser support, national and international transfer of the deceased (for trips of up to 60 days), plus legal and psychological assistance. A one-year waiting period applies in the event of suicide.
- Adeslas Completo Funeral Insurance: Includes everything in the Single Premium policy, along with will writing services (including notary fees), advice on living wills (advance decisions), and optional cover such as DNA preservation of the deceased for 10 years, digital legacy management, and education grants for surviving children. A two-month waiting period applies for death resulting from illness.
- Adeslas Plus Funeral Insurance: Builds on the previous policies with expanded legal and psychological support, worldwide transfer of the deceased for trips of up to 90 days, and optional foreign national repatriation and travel assistance for medical expenses abroad. This policy also carries a two-month waiting period for illness-related claims.
For all three policy types, no medical questionnaire or health declaration is required to obtain cover.
Which type of funeral insurance is right for your age and circumstances?
There is no single answer, but rather the choice depends mainly on two profiles:
- Taking out cover at an early or middle age (up to the age of 65–70): Regular payment structures (natural, level, mixed, or semi-natural) allow you to start with a lower monthly instalment. At Adeslas, this corresponds to our Adeslas Completo or Adeslas Plus Funeral Insurance policies, both of which allow you to include multiple family members under a single policy.
- Taking out cover at an older age (60–99 years) or without an existing policy: In this case, a single premium policy avoids the financial risk of starting a policy with rising instalments at an age when annual costs would already be high, in exchange for a single upfront payment.
Summary: How to choose the right type of funeral insurance
- If you are young, a natural premium policy offers an affordable starting rate, but keep in mind that your instalments will increase every year.
- If you prefer a fixed premium for life, you can opt for a level premium policy, which corresponds to our Adeslas Completo Funeral Insurance.
- The mixed or semi-natural premium option applies to our Adeslas Plus Funeral Insurance, which is our most popular policy. Premiums increase gradually in the early years but level off from the age of 71 onwards.
- A single premium policy involves a single upfront payment, is designed for people aged over 60 who do not currently hold a policy and includes the option to surrender the policy to recover part of the premium paid if needed. This is the structure used in our Adeslas Single Premium Funeral Insurance
